Spotlight on Sailor Danny

April 7, 2025

JAG has always been a place where music and art collide, creating an atmosphere that’s both electric and inspiring.

One local artist who has played a major role in shaping that energy is Sailor Danny, whose striking and expressive paintings of legendary musicians have become a favorite of hotel guests.

We sat down with him to learn more about his journey, his artistic process, and what working with JAG has meant to him.

A Journey in Art

Q: Where are you from?

St. John’s, NL

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your journey as an artist? How did you get started?

I guess I got started as soon as I could hold a pencil and haven’t stopped since! For me, it’s always been about learning, exploring new things, and experimenting with different mediums- it’s a pure obsession.

Q: Where does the name “Sailor Danny” come from?

Growing up in a family with a long history in the marine industry, my parents encouraged me to explore something more stable than art for a steady income. As a result, I found myself working as a Navigation Officer in the commercial shipping sector. But when I decided to pursue art professionally, I felt it was important to separate myself from my maritime career. That’s when the moniker “Sailor Danny” was born.

Style & Influences

Q: Who are your biggest artistic influences? Are there particular painters or styles that have shaped your work?

I can’t point to many artists who’ve inspired my style directly, as I’ve always been more drawn to those who broke away from the norm and pushed past the gatekeepers—that’s been my true inspiration. Beyond that, working in the marine industry has allowed me to travel the world, and those new experiences and perspectives have always sparked fresh ideas for my work.

Q: How would you describe your artistic style? Has it evolved over time?

I’m not sure I can fully describe my work or style, but I’d say it’s all about pushing my own limits as an artist. For me, it’s the continuous evolution that drives me forward and keeps me motivated.

Q: What materials and techniques do you most enjoy working with?

As a self-taught artist, I tend to use whatever feels right in the moment. My primary medium is acrylic paint, and I work traditionally, but I’ve also begun incorporating paint markers and, more recently, an airbrush, blending these with other techniques to create something unique.

Bringing JAG’s Music Vibe to Life

Q: What artists have you featured? How many pieces do you have at JAG?

Honestly, I couldn’t list them all, but I’d estimate there are probably between 20 and 30 pieces by now.

Q: Did the hotel’s music-inspired theme influence your artistic approach?

I’m not sure if it directly influenced my approach, but it has definitely introduced me to a wider range of musicians!

Q: How long do your pieces take to complete?

On average, between 20 to 40 hours.

Q: Do you have a favourite piece that you’ve done for JAG? Why?

Yes! The vibrant, multicolored painting of Keith and Mick.

Q: Why is it your favourite?

It was incredibly fun to paint with surreal colors—it added a whole new dimension to the creative process.

Q: What was the most challenging piece you have done for JAG?

Probably my latest piece, Bob Dylan, which hangs over the entrance to JAG Soundhouse. Creating and preparing the custom canvas, especially due to its size, was a challenge. Once that was sorted, I had a clear vision for the painting and pushed my limits further than I had with previous work.

Q: How large is this piece?

5ft x 6ft

Art, Impact, and Where to Find His Work

Q: Your work is a big part of JAG’s atmosphere- how does it feel knowing your art is seen by so many guests and music lovers?

It feels amazing! The support I’ve received allows me to keep doing what I love and push forward.

Q: What’s the best way for people to follow your work- do you have a website, social media, or an online store?

You can currently find me on almost every social media platform under “Sailor Danny’s Art,” but I’m hoping to launch a website soon!

Sailor Danny’s art has become a signature part of JAG’s identity, blending music and visual storytelling in a way that resonates with guests and music lovers alike.

Whether you’re staying at the hotel or just passing through, take a moment to appreciate his work- you just might discover a new favorite piece.
